Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win joins Singapore International Energy Week 2020 event online

          The Singapore International Energy Week 2020 (SIEW 2020) is being held from 26 to 30 October and Deputy Minister for Electricity and Energy (Electricity) U Khin Maung Win attended the second day event via videoconference from Office No.27 in Nay Pyi Taw today afternoon.

          At the ceremony, Singaporean Minister for the Prime Minister’s Office Dr. Tan See Leng and the Executive Director of International Energy Agency Dr. Fatih Birol delivered the opening remarks.

          The 2nd Global Ministerial Conference on System Integration of Renewables programme of SIEW 2020 was held under the topic “Developing Resilient and Flexible Power Systems” with the panellists as the Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Hungarian State Minister for Energy and Climate Affairs H.E. Dr Peter Kaderjak, Finland State Secretary for Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment H.E. Kimmo Tilikainen, German  Parliamentary State Secretary for Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy H.E. Elisabeth Winkelmeier-Becker, Japanese State Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry H.E. Yasumasa Nagasak, Laos Deputy Minister for Energy and Mines H.E. Sinava Souphanouvong, Norwegian  State Secretary for Ministry of Petrolem and Energy H.E. Tony Christian Tiller, American Assistant Secretary for Office of International Affairs, Department of Energy H.E. Theodore J. Garrish , Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), India Chairman Mr. Shri P.K. Pujari, Thailand Deputy Governor – Strategy of Electricity Generating Authority Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, GE Renewables Chief Executive Officer Mr. Jerome Pecresse. They discussed the critical role of enhancing resiliency and flexibility in our power systems against physical disruptions, supply shocks and digital threats, experiences and measures to ensure stability of supply while increasing the use of clean energy sources, the role of digitalisation in the future of smart and clean energy systems, to ensure the electricity grids remain resilient and flexible, lessons learnt from managing the impact of COVID-19 on the energy systems and the role of digitalisation in creating a resilient and flexible power system.

          Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win said the electricity system is a key driver of the economic growth, the electricity supply chain comprises of generation, transmission and distribution and end-user services rely on operation of all these upstream components.

          He continued that the ministry is striving to provide peak power, base-load power and spinning reserves harmonically based on the previous experiences and making utmost efforts to fulfill the electricity demand of the people during this Stay at Home Period.

          He added that in order to achieve the resilient and flexible, power system, the initiatives like constructing new transmission lines and substations, upgrading the protection, communication and automation system, establishing mobile maintenance teams, reserving the spare equipment, coordinating between generation and demand and planning to implement distributed renewable energy projects are undertaken but it is still inadequacy of the financial and technology support.

          He also said that digitalization is very important for the grid stabilization and optimization through real-time load balancing, reduces costs and increases the resilience and reliability of power system and now digital SCADA system is used in Main Power Stations, Substations and Main Control centers in Myanmar.

          The Deputy Minister concluded that challenges are opportunities for the development and all countries have to cooperate and construct to be the “Low Carbon Energy Future” together.
